Sochi to host 2014 Games

International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge announced the decision last night at the IOC session in Guatemla City.

The Sochi bid includes plans to develop sports and resort infrastructure, in a sustainable, inclusive, environmentally responsible manner.

Sochi beat PyeongChang in the Republic of Korea by 51 votes to 47 in the second round of voting.

Dmitry Chernyshenko, Chief Executive Officer of Sochi 2014 (pictured above), said: "We are overjoyed. This is one of the most important days in Russia's history.

"The Games will help Russia's transition as a young democracy. Millions of lives are going to be transformed by the fantastic power of the Olympic Games."

"The Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will mark the history. This will be a memorable event for the whole Olympic Family, the athletes and the spectators."

During the five day session IOC members heard updates from all the Host Cities, including the London 2012 team.
