Cheered on by the home crowd, Dame Tanni won silver in her last ever race, the T53 200m.

Dame Tanni said: "It was a really, really emotional day. It's probably the only time in my life I didn't mind coming second."

Over the course of a 19 year career, Dame Tanni won a record 11 Paralympic gold medals.

Sebastian Coe, Chair of the London 2012 Organising Committee, said: "Tanni is our greatest Paralympic athlete, and her consistent medal-winning performances have made her an inspiration to young disabled athletes in the UK and throughout the world.

"She is a great ambassador for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, and was part of our delegation to Singapore when we won the Games.

"We wish Tanni all the best for her future career, and I know we will be working closely with her as our plans take shape for the London 2012 Paralympic Games."

The British team won a total of 22 gold, 15 silver and 11 bronze medals during the seven day event.
