The Swiss-based organisation has been given the title Champion of the Earth 2007 by the United Nations Environment Programme.

The IOC was chosen for its work in promoting environment and sustainability values in the planning and staging of Olympic Games.

The award is made annually for inspirational environmental leaders from each region of the world who make an impact at policy level.

IOC President Jacques Rogge will be presented with the award at a special ceremony in Singapore in April, along with Al Gore and five other environmental leaders.

Dr Rogge said: "I am very honoured to receive this award, which is a great recognition of the IOC's responsibility and commitment to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable development in sport."
