First UK School Games hailed as success

Over 1,000 top young athletes from around the UK have enjoyed a four-day competition aimed to give them a taste for elite events ahead of the 2012 Games.

Held at world-class facilities in Glasgow, the first UK School Games featured athletics, swimming, gymnastics, table tennis and fencing, with disability events in athletics and swimming.

Living in a special athletes' village, competitors were given a boost from Olympic gold medallists Dame Kelly Holmes and Sir Steve Redgrave, on hand with words of inspiration and encouragement.

Steve Grainger, Chief Executive of the Youth Sport Trust, said: "We are thrilled at the success of this inaugural UK School Games and the level of competition has been quite incredible.

"We are delighted at how the young volunteers have also excelled in their roles and helped us put on a show to remember.

"The Glasgow Games have signalled the beginning of a very bright future for competitive school sport across the country, will live long in the memory, and will act as an inspiration for next year and beyond."

The 2007 UK School Games will be held in Coventry, which hosted last year's International Children's Games.
