Planning to commence on Broxbourne canoe course

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has commenced master planning on a new whitewater canoe course at Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, which will be a host venue for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The course is the first of its kind in south-east England and will provide facilities for whitewater sports after 2012.

ODA Chief Executive David Higgins said today: "The Olympic Delivery Authority is committed to delivering a high quality venue at Broxbourne that will provide an important sporting and regional legacy after the Games. Providing a legacy is critical to all our thinking."

Chairman of the Organising Committee for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Sebastian Coe said the new venue will enable the skills and excitement of canoeing to be showcased in a spectacular sports setting in 2012.

"Our vision is to inspire more young people into sport. New venues like the Broxbourne canoe course will provide such opportunities, which will in turn lead to healthier and better resourced communities."

The venue will serve as a catalyst for regeneration in the Spitalbrook area, creating leisure facilities and environmental enhancements.
