Plans for 21st Century Park unveiled

Parkland area during the Games

New plans have been unveiled for the London 2012 Olympic Park. They will combine centuries of British park design with ground-breaking green technology to create a 21st Century park.

Former industrial land, much of it contaminated through years of industrial neglect, is being transformed to create 100 hectares of parklands that will provide a colourful setting and festival atmosphere both during and after the Games.

Visitors to the Park during the Games will enjoy broad sweeping lawns and footpaths leading down to riverbanks. It also includes seating areas and public spaces with live screens showing the sporting action.

The southern area of the Park will focus on retaining the festival atmosphere from the Games, with riverside gardens, markets, events, cafes and bars. The northern area will use the latest green techniques to manage rain water while providing quieter public space and habitats for hundreds of existing and rare species, from kingfishers to otters.

Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell said: ‘These designs represent the very best in urban landscaping and will not only make the Olympic Park a destination in itself - creating a fantastic atmosphere during the Games - but also leave a beautiful landscape for millions to enjoy for generations to come.’
