John Armitt with Cynthia Barlow distribute Fresnel lenses on site

A new campaign in London focussing on lorries travelling to and from the Olympic Park has been launched to help improve safety for cyclists.

Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) Chairman John Armitt and cycle safety campaigner Cynthia Barlow joined forces to help distribute Fresnel lenses to lorry drivers entering and leaving the Park this morning.

Fresnel lenses are stuck on the passenger window of a lorry to allow the driver to see cyclists where before there would have been a ‘blind spot’.

John Armitt said: ‘Fresnel lenses are an effective way of increasing the view of the road, and may help reduce the numbers of injuries and deaths of cyclists in London.

‘We are committed to working in partnership with our contractors to ensure the highest standards of health and safety on the Olympic Park. In addition to this campaign, we are also aiming to transport 50 per cent of the construction materials needed on site by rail and water, which means that we will be taking thousands of unnecessary lorry journeys off London’s roads.’

A total of 1,600 Fresnel lenses will be distributed in the first stage of the campaign.
