London 2012’s Cultural Olympiad launched with a series of sprints this morning, as Olympic athletes including Sebastian Coe and Dame Kelly Holmes featured in Martin Creed’s Work No. 850 at Tate Britain.

The event was part of Open Weekend, running until Sunday 28 September and featuring over 600 inspiring cultural events across the UK.

These range from a unique outdoor performance, ‘Stories of the Sea’, at Weymouth; outdoor dance performances and film screenings on the South Bank in London; and museums across the UK opening their doors to reveal hidden treasures. At 20.12hrs (8.12pm) tonight cultural venues will 'light up' in London 2012 colours.

The day also saw the raising of the official Olympic and Paralympic Flags at City Hall, handed over to Mayor of London Boris Johnson during the Closing Ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Games.
