Work starts on Energy Centre site

19 August 2008

Energy Centre design
Design of the new Energy Centre in the Olympic Park

Work started on site this week on the new Energy Centre in the west of the Olympic Park.

The Centre will provide efficient power, heating and cooling systems for venues across the Park, and for the new communities that will be located in the area after 2012.

The Centre will house biomass boilers that use woodchip – a sustainable fuel – and gas to generate heat. Heat generated by producing electricity will be captured and used to heat water across the area, including the swimming pools in the Aquatics Centre.

Work is also well underway on the Primary Substation (PSS) that will be built next to the Centre. The PSS will supply electricity to the Park and the adjacent Stratford City development.

More than 200 piles have now been driven up to 19 metres into the ground to form the foundations for the building. Construction work on the PSS is due to be completed by summer 2009.
