The contract to provide materials such as sand, gravel, crushed stone and recycled concrete needed for the construction of venues and infrastructure in the Olympic Park has been awarded.
The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) set ‘green’ targets for all the companies bidding for the contract. At least 25 per cent of the materials supplied need to be recycled and at least 50 per cent of materials, by weight, have to be transported to the Olympic Park by sustainable methods.
Aggregate Industries UK Ltd won the contract following a competitive tendering process.
ODA’s Head of Sustainability Dan Epstein said: ‘Aggregate Industries exceeded the ODA targets and are able to commit to providing over 70 per cent of the materials needed as recycled aggregates and to transport 99 per cent of materials by water or rail. This is unprecedented for a project of this size, scale and complexity.’
