The new venue for the London 2012 Canoe/Kayak Slalom events has been confirmed as the Showground in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire. It will become a White Water Canoe Centre after the Games - a major lesiure attraction as well as a competition venue for elite events.
The Showground venue was chosen after the original Spitalbrook site - six miles away -was found to be contaminated. The venue is now closer to the Olympic Park, meaning shorter travel times for athletes living in the Olympic Village and competing at Broxbourne.
The venue change has been approved by the International Canoe Federation (ICF), the International Olympic Committee, and the British Olympic Association.
Simon Toulson, General Secretary of the ICF, said: 'The ICF has worked closely with the London Organising Committee and the British Canoe Union on the two sites. The new site looks ideal with a natural setting, convenient for spectators and athletes. It has the potential to be an excellent leisure canoeing centre for the community post-Games.'
