A new bus service for workers on site will boost local employment and benefit the environment.
The service will transport workers between construction areas and venues within the Park. It will greatly reduce the number of cars on local roads, bringing environmental benefits and reducing local congestion.
The contract for the bus service was awarded to Ealing Community Transport Group and the Hackney Community Transport Group (E&HCT), who formed a partnership specifically to bid for the work.
E&HCT is committed to employing local people and targeting people that find it hard to get work.
ODA Director of Transport Hugh Sumner said: ‘E&HCT were the successful bidders for this contract due to their commitment to making a difference to the areas in which they operate, primarily targeting the unemployed locally, who they then recruit and train to drive their vehicles.’
The contract covers drivers, buses, vehicle maintenance, route-planning and timetabling. The buses will start on 14 April 2008 and increase as the numbers of workers on site increases.
