A London bus will travel from Trafalgar Square to Beijing

London bus drivers have the opportunity to undertake the journey of a lifetime – from London to Beijing.

Transport for London, Visit London and the Greater London Authority are organising the journey, which will highlight the growing links between the UK and China to mark the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

Led by an experienced expedition leader Mac Mackenney, an environmentally-friendly red double-decker bus will leave from Trafalgar Square in June and travel through countries including Spain, Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan. It will reach China before the Olympic Flag is handed over from Beijing to London, when the London 2012 Olympiad begins.

Eight drivers will be recruited to complete the journey following an assessment activity weekend for 30 shortlisted drivers. The final eight plus four reserves being selected by Transport for London, the London 2012 Organising Committee and the Bus to Beijing expedition team in April.

Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone said: 'London's successful bid for the Olympic Games was in large part down to the diverse and international character of our city. What better way to celebrate the growing cultural and economic links between the UK and China than by giving a once in a lifetime opportunity to a lucky group of London bus drivers to represent our city and our world class transport to the rest of the world.'
