The two winners of the London 2012 school ‘VeloDream’ design competition have been announced.
Curwen Primary School in Newham, London, and St Robert of Newminster Secondary School in Washington, Tyne and Wear, won the UK-wide competition for schoolchildren to design their own dream Cycling venues for future Games.
The competition was launched in September 2007 by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), and supported by Lee Valley Regional Park Authority. Ten finalists, shortlisted from over 500 schools who signed up for the competition across the country, travelled to London for two days of grand final events and activities.
The schools attended a workshop run by the London 2012 VeloPark designers where they built a scale model of the velodrome. This was followed by a visit around the Olympic Park and the opportunity to meet BMX World Champion Shanaze Reade.
At the end of the two-day stay in London Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell and Paralympian Ade Adipitan announced the winners at an awards ceremony at the Design Museum.
The winning schools will now be invited to a special workshop with the London 2012 VeloPark design team where they will help design an element of the VeloPark in the Olympic Park.
Vivienne Francis, Sports Manager at Curwen Primary School in Newham, said: ‘Reaching the VeloDream finals and getting to meet world-class athletes and designers was a once in a lifetime opportunity, so to win the competition is amazing and I’m proud of all our pupils.’
John Green, Head of Technology at St Robert of Newminster School, Washington, said: ‘The designs the students came up with were excellent so I’m delighted that their talents and hard work have helped them win this competition.’
