Gordon Brown today announced a £9 million investment programme to encourage young people in disadvantaged countries around the world to take up sport.

Launched in India, the 'International Inspiration' programme builds on the promise made to the International Olympic Committee that the London 2012 Games would inspire increased sports participation around the world.

The initial pilot programme will run in five countries - Azerbaijan, Brazil, India, Palau and Zambia - with the aim of eventually reaching across the world.

It will create opportunities for children and young people to take up sport and perform to the best of their ability.

The programme is being led by UK Sport, the Government's international sports agency.

Sebastian Coe, Chair of the London 2012 Organising Committee, said: 'Our vision is to use the power of the Games to inspire change - and changing the lives of young people in particular is the driving force behind our plans.

'As part of our pledge to the IOC in Singapore, we committed to inspire young people around the world to choose sport.

'This is a tangible example of how we are delivering on this promise and using the power and magic of sport to change the lives of young people around the world - and leave a lasting international legacy.'
