Demolition on the five main permanent venue sites – the Olympic Stadium, the Aquatics Centre, the International Broadcast Centre/Main Press Centre, the VeloPark and the Olympic Village – has been completed.
Completion of work in these areas on the Olympic Park site caps a significant year of progress for London 2012. Both 6km powerlines tunnels running underneath the Olympic Park have been completed with more than a third of the 200km cabling already installed. High Speed 1 rail link is now in operation linking St. Pancras International and mainland Europe. Designs for the Olympic Stadium have also been unveiled.
2007 has also seen the launch of the new London 2012 brand, three tier one sponsors have been secured and London 2012 has received strong endorsement from IOC Co-ordination Commission on progress to date.
2008 will see a significant change on site as the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) moves into the ‘big build’ phase of the project with the number of workers on site increasing dramatically. London will also take over the Olympic and Paralympic flags after the Beijing Games in August.
The ODA has published a ‘demolish, dig, design’ update helping to provide transparency and accountability of public funds across the project.
