The contract to supply the ready-mixed concrete needed for the construction of the Olympic Park has been awarded.

Aggregate Industries UK won the bidding process partly due to its emphasis on meeting sustainability targets set out for the Games. These include using materials with at least 20 per cent recycled content and transporting 50 per cent of materials onto the Park site by sustainable means.

ODA Chief Executive David Higgins said: ‘This is a key contract for the London 2012 project and will help ensure consistency of supply and stability in price for contractors working on the Park site.

‘Sustainability has not traditionally been a key requirement for these kind of contracts in the past but we have been impressed with how the industry has responded and adapted to our ambitions.’

The first temporary road has been built using crushed rubble recycled from other parts of the site. It will be used for site traffic during the construction to minimise the impact on local roads around the Park site.

Crushed rubble from other parts of the site have been recycled to construct the new road supporting commitments to minimising waste.
