Demolition on the site of the Olympic Stadium.

Nearly half of the buildings on the site of the Olympic Stadium have now been demolished.

Sixteen buildings have been knocked down since July, with the rest due to be demolished by the end of the year.

Work has also begun to change the ground levels across the site to create a level construction platform for the Stadium.

Some parts of the site will be lowered by nine metres, while other areas will be raised by five metres.

Around 600,000 tonnes of soil will be reused in other parts of the Park – the equivalent to the weight of around 27 aircraft carriers.

Two temporary bridges will shortly be installed on the site. These will help to minimise disruption to local residents by reducing the number of lorries on public roads and bridges.

ODA Chief Executive David Higgins said: 'We said that by the Beijing 2008 Games the majority of the Olympic Park would be cleared and cleaned. This progress keeps the ODA on track to have the site of one of the ‘big four’ London 2012 venues ready for construction to start next summer.'
