Work began this week to divert powerlines in the Olympic Park to temporary pylons, unlocking a key area of land and moving the construction of the Olympic Village a step closer.
A one kilometre section of powerlines around the Olympic Village area will be temporarily diverted, allowing construction work on the Olympic Village to start early next year - a year earlier than planned.
Two six kilometre tunnels are currently being dug beneath the Olympic Park to allow the power needed for the Games and the community after 2012 to be carried underground and the overhead powerlines in the Park to be removed in early 2009.
Olympic Delivery Authority Chief Executive David Higgins said: "We are making good progress on the powerlines project and with the underground tunnelling work nearing completion, we are turning our attention above ground to put this key diversion in place."
