Construction started today on The Greenway - the main walkway through the heart of the Olympic Park.
Currently in a bad state and underused by local residents, a first stage of work will fill potholes and improve lighting.
In the meantime, designs for the walkway during the Games and in legacy will be finalised and the more extensive redesign construction work will start next year.
Kath Markey, ODA project sponsor for The Greenway project said: "This is the start of the process to regenerate the neglected public spaces in and around the Olympic Park area.
"The temporary work we are starting this week will help improve access until we can open the newly-designed and re-constructed Greenway next summer.
"The Greenway will then form a key walking and cycling route in the lower Lea Valley before, during and after the 2012, helping achieve our aim of a public transport Games."
