Montenegro is set to become the 204th National Olympic Committee following approval by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The tiny Balkan nation, with a population of less than 700,000, will be formally voted into the Olympic family at the IOC's July session in Guatemala City.
The state has already been recognised by international sporting federations in the fields of athletics, volleyball, football and basketball.
The sporting milestone is an important development for Montenegro following a period of political tension in the Balkans.
Montenegro voted for independence from Serbia in a referendum in 2006.
