Seb Coe has described how the 2012 Games will leave a lasting legacy for decades after the event, during a speech at a major sporting conference today.

"To me, sport is the 'hidden social worker' in the community. It's also a great educator and motivator," Seb Coe said.

"The new London Olympic Park and venues will be built in one of the most under-developed areas of the UK, creating thousands of new jobs, homes as well as community facilities, transport links and greener forms of energy.

"This will transform lives and the future of surrounding communities."

Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) Chief Executive David Higgins addressed the conference yesterday. He explained how long-term use of facilities and community regeneration are built into Games development plans.

David Higgins said: "Planning Games and legacy together will help us set new standards for sustainable sports venues and urban development as we achieve our regeneration ambition for the Lower Lea Valley."

The two-day Legacy Lives conference brought together in London decision makers from various major sporting events and organisations to discuss how to plan for long-term benefits.
