Support for London 2012 has reached a high

Public support for the London 2012 Games is at an all-time high according to a new UK-wide survey.

79% of the population support the Games taking place in London in 2012, compared to 75% approval in July 2005.

According to the survey, undertaken on behalf of London 2012, the strongest support comes from Wales and the West of England, where 87% of respondents said they were in favour of London hosting the Games.

Three quarters of Londoners themselves also support the Games.

Sebastian Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee, said: "These results are very heartening, and reflect the support we have seen on our travels around the UK.

"The whole of the UK is looking at ways to maximize benefits from the Games, from business opportunities, to tourism benefits to inspiring more young people to take up sport, and such strong public support will help us make sure no opportunities are missed."
