Children from schools near the Olympic Park site received a special Olympic gift today in the form of a 10-metre Christmas tree.
Olympic gold medal-winning sprinter Jason Gardener presented the tree to pupils at St Paul’s School in Tower Hamlets on behalf of the schools and communities of London.
The children held a lighting ceremony and sang carols to celebrate its arrival, and pinned decorations with their hopes and wishes to the branches.
Mayor of Lillehammer Synnøve Brenden Klemetrud sent a message of friendship in a letter with the tree.
The school's headmaster, Terry Bennett, commented: "The children are very excited about the Games coming to London in 2012 anyway, and this very generous gift from Lillehammer has increased their interest and excitement as they look forward to 2012."
