Edinburgh has won the right to hold the World Cross Country Championships.
The endurance event will take place in Edinburgh's Holyrood Park, which played host to the European Cross Country Championships in 2003.
Sebastian Coe, Chair of the London 2012 Organising Committee of the Olympic Games, welcomed the news: "This is another great opportunity for the UK to show its ability to host major sports events - a legacy of London's successful Games bid.
"This will be a huge boost for Athletics in Scotland and for Glasgow's bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games."
As well as staging the event, organisers are planning to run youth and community races to inspire grassroots involvement.
They will also run a home countries' international for athletes who miss out on the GB team.
