The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has announced it will start negotiations for the design and build of the showpiece 2012 Olympic Stadium with the team who delivered the new Arsenal Stadium.

The ODA received international and national interest to prequalify for the design and construction tender but Team Sir Robert McAlpine was the only consortium to meet all pre-qualification criteria.

They will now enter into negotiations and hope to officially confirm the appointment in the New Year.

Team Sir Robert McAlpine have extensive experience in the design and build of sports venues, including the Main Stadium for the Sydney 2000 Games.

Members of the team also worked on creating the Eden Project in Cornwall.

The 80,000 seat Olympic Stadium will host the Athletics events and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Games.

It will be rescaled after 2012 to provide a lasting legacy for the local community.
