First major 2012 tender announced

The tender for London 2012's showpiece Olympic Stadium was announced today by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA).

Companies are being asked to combine exceptional design with the highest quality construction in their pitch for the work.

The Stadium will seat 80,000 spectators during the Games, including track and field events and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

It will then be adapted into a smaller 'Living Stadium', leaving a world-class facility for sport, concerts and cultural events.

A review process has been launched to establish the best mix of sports and facilities post-Games, to maximise the benefits to the area.

ODA Chief Executive David Higgins said: "As the Stadium brief makes clear, we are seeking an integrated team that can combine design innovation with construction excellence to create a stage fit for the Olympians and Paralympians of 2012.

"We also want to create a 'Living Stadium' post Games that can be at the heart of the new community that will live in this area."

London 2012 Organising Committee Chair Sebastian Coe said: "The Olympic Stadium will be the centrepiece of the Olympic Park.

"It must showcase the world's best athletes for the best Games ever, but also be capable of being used for decades to come by the local community as a living legacy from the 2012 Games."
