London 2012 marks three years to go to the Paralympic Games

28 Aug 2009
Saturday 29 August is exactly three years from the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Paralympic Games. To mark the milestone, the London 2012 Organising Committee has announced the appointment of Chris Holmes MBE as the new Director of Paralympic Integration.

Paralympic gold medallist Ellie Simmonds and Director of Paralympic Integration Chris Holmes mark three years to go to the London 2012 Games at the Aquatics Centre site

Chris will lead on all aspects of London 2012’s planning and organisation for the Paralympic Games. He has had a distinguished career as a Paralympic swimmer, winning nine Paralympic gold medals - six at the Barcelona Games in 1992.

The three years to go milestone was also marked by a visit to the Aquatics Centre site in the Olympic Park by Chris and Paralympic Swimming gold medallist Ellie Simmonds.

Much progress has been made on planning and preparation for the Paralympic Games in the past year. This includes:

  • An Inclusive Design Strategy published by the Olympic Delivery Authority, outlining how the Olympic Park will be built to be accessible to disabled people. The London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) has also been looking at how best to make designs for the venues at Games-time accessible.
  • Planning permission for Paralympic Tennis venue Eton Manor.
  • The launch of 'access now' - a guaranteed interview scheme for every disabled candidate that meets the person specification for any salaried role at LOCOG.

This autumn, 'Unlimited' - the third major project of the Cultural Olympiad - launches, Unlimited. Developed with the UK Arts Councils and the British Council, it will be the largest ever celebration of disability arts, culture and sport in the UK.

London 2012 partners are also firmly behind the Paralympic Games, with a number of programmes running to help ParalympicsGB athletes and promote the Games.

LOCOG Chair Seb Coe said: 'In three years time we will be getting ready to host a spectacular Paralympic Games.

'We are proud to be welcoming the Paralympics home, and are determined to deliver a spectacular sporting showcase for Paralympic sport. We want to use the power of the Games to raise awareness of Paralympic sport and to challenge stereotypes about disability and to give every disabled child a chance to have access to sporting opportunities.'

Chris Holmes said: 'I am honoured to be taking up this position and it is a dream come true for me.  My role is to ensure we continue our detailed work for a first class delivery of the Paralympic Games in 2012.

'My priorities are to educate our audiences so they understand and enjoy Paralympic sport. The Games offer a truly unique opportunity for our country – a chance to change Britain for the better.'
