Three years to go and counting

In exactly three years, the eyes of the world will be on London and the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Today marks three years to go to the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games

To mark ‘three years to go’, Team GB and ParalympicsGB athletes are joining London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) Chairman Sebastian Coe, Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) Chair John Armitt, Olympics Minister Rt Hon Tessa Jowell MP and Mayor of London Boris Johnson on a tour of the Olympic Park.

Athletes, including new World Diving Champion Tom Daley, will see first-hand the progress of the venues they will potentially be competing at in three years’ time.

The athletes are travelling to the Olympic Park on what will become the ‘Javelin’ train service at Games-time, in the first time-trial of this train between St Pancras International and Stratford International. The train is using the High Speed One track to Stratford International Station. In 2012, the service will bring up to 25,000 visitors per hour to and from the Olympic Park along this 140mph line.

LOCOG Chair Sebastian Coe said: ‘In exactly three years, London and the whole of the UK will be getting ready to stage the greatest event on earth and we will not disappoint. There is a tangible sense of excitement building and a genuine sense of belief that the Games in 2012 will not only be a source of intense national pride, but that the benefits will be felt for generations to come.’

At the same time, the ODA announced a new set of milestones, known as ‘the big build: structures’, to be achieved during the next phase of constructing the venues and infrastructure for the London 2012 Games.

LOCOG’s focus over the next 12 months will be on:

  • The launch of the London 2012 volunteer programme in 2010.
  • Unveiling of London 2012 mascots in 2010.
  • Early details of London 2012’s ticketing strategy released in 2010, ahead of tickets going on sale in 2011.
  • Appointment of further sponsors and licensees, with more London 2012 merchandise on sale.
  • LOCOG procurement begins in earnest – including the purchase of more than one million pieces of sporting equipment.
