The event was organised as part of the London 2012 Open Weekend – supported by BP – and was the first opportunity for members of the public to see inside the Olympic Stadium.
It was one of 750 Open Weekend events taking place around the UK to enable access to excellence in sport, arts and culture, and to celebrate ‘three years to go’ until the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Open Weekend events span all forms of sport, arts, and culture, including opportunities to train with experts, see previously hidden treasures and go behind the scenes of arts and sporting venues.
The 80,000 seater Olympic Stadium, now a landmark on the horizon of East London, lies at the heart of the Olympic Park. It will be the focal point for billions of people around the world as the Opening Ceremony for the London 2012 Olympic Stadium commences on the evening of 27 July 2012.
The visitors won the opportunity to visit the Stadium through competitions in the Evening Standard, LBC radio and on Twitter. They viewed the inside of the Olympic Stadium from the South Stand together with Gail Emms - one the UK’s most successful Badminton players and a Silver Medallist at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.
They each received a souvenir photo to mark the occasion as well as a 'three years to go' commemorative £5 coin.
