Plans were officially launched today for a new 60km-long walking and cycling route, inspired by the London 2012 Games and Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, which is to be celebrated in 2012.

HRH The Duke of Gloucester helped launch plans for a new walking and cycling route
HRH The Duke of Gloucester and Paralympian Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson launched the plans for the Jubilee Greenway walking and cycling route at the Olympic Park. It maximises use of existing routes to connect all central London 2012 venues to many of the capital’s main attractions and historic places.
The route was developed by The Jubilee Walkway Trust, which also created the Jubilee Walkway in 1977 in recognition of HM The Queen’s first 25 years.
As part of the launch, HRH The Duke of Gloucester cycled along parts of the route, including The Greenway alongside the Olympic Park, to help identify where the route could be improved before 2012.
Olympic Delivery Authority Transport Director Hugh Sumner said: ‘Encouraging our workforce and thousands of spectators to use these sustainable and active transport options in three years’ time will help London 2012’s goal to be the first “sustainable” Games. This event today shows that it is something that London can make happen, and something that will set the standard for future major events.’
London 2012 launched its walking and cycling plans earlier this year. The plans include improvements to existing walking and cycling routes into venues and encouraging more people to use these active modes of travel during and after the Games.
