Taking place at the North Greenwich Arena (also known as The O2), the event was vital for LOCOG to test operations ahead of the Games. Testing went well as workforce delivered the competition in an pre-existing venue and Gymnastics technology including timing, scoring and results were tested and performed well. The transition of apparatus on the field of play between disciplines was also successful.
Over 50,000 tickets were sold over the course of the seven day competition and the crowds enjoyed group and individual Artistic and Rhythmic Gymnastics as well as Trampoline.
Debbie Jevans, Director of Sport at LOCOG said: “The Visa International Gymnastics was the largest test event that we have run to date. As an Olympic Qualifying event we had to ensure everything was delivered to the highest standard and the team performed really well. The event has put us in great shape for delivery of the Games time event in what is a spectacular venue.”
In the Artistic Gymnastics team qualification event the Great Britain Men’s team took the gold medal ahead of France and Spain and confirmed their place at London 2012.
Great Britain gymnast Daniel Keatings said: "It was amazing, especially the support from the home crowd. We had to pull together as a team after Tokyo (World Championships), but the crowd really lifted us."
In the Rhythmic Gymnastics the Great Britain team missed out on qualification after narrowly missing the score required to prove they were good enough for the group event at London 2012. The team scored 44.950 in group qualifying, falling short of the 45.223 target set by the British Olympic Association.
