Throughout the period of the Games, which open on 12 February, the screens will show Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games material from 8.00am to 10.00pm each day. Highlights will run in the mornings and early afternoon before live coverage begins in the early evening until 10.00pm.
Interspersed with the highlights packages and live coverage from the Games will be the screening of exclusive interviews with Vancouver 2010 hopefuls Eve Muirhead (Curling), David Murdoch (Curling), Jon Eley (Short Track Speed Skating), Sarah Lindsay (Short Track Speed Skating), Chemmy Alcott (Alpine Skiing) Gillian Cooke & Nicola Minichiello (Bobsleigh), Shelley Rudman & Kristan Bromley (Skeleton) and previous Winter Olympic contenders including Nicky Gooch, Robin Cousins and ‘Eddie the Eagle’ (Michael Edwards). In addition to this, inspiring athlete diaries from the Games will be supplied by Worldwide Partner Panasonic & the British Olympic Association and the BBC will show its Top 10 Winter Games moments.
The Live Sites will also show highlights from ‘Canada CODE’, from the Vancouver Cultural Olympiad which will include a number of specially created films from the Canadian cultural community. They will be played on Live Site screens in Canada as a way to welcome the world to the host country of the 2010 Winter Games, and also on Live Sites across the UK to showcase the Vancouver Cultural Olympiad.
Seb Coe, Chair of London 2012, said: “The Live Sites are a great opportunity for cities across the UK to enjoy the action, and, with our exclusive content, they will be a great destination for families to enjoy what we expect to be an exciting and inspiring Winter Games. This will be a real taste of what the public can expect for 2012.”
The Big Screens are erected and run in partnership between LOCOG, the BBC and the various cities, in association with London 2012 partners BT and Lloyds TSB, supported by Cisco and the National Lottery through the Olympic Lottery Distributor. The screens carry a combination of local and national news, London 2012 updates, partner films and local community focused output such as university graduations or local art projects. During the period of the Vancouver Games the screens will be dressed in London 2012 branding. There are currently 18 London 2012 Live Sites located in Bristol, Cardiff, Middlesborough, Norwich, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Swansea, Waltham Forest, Bradford, Derby, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Swindon, Edinburgh, Leicester, Dover and Woolwich.
At Games-time in 2012 it is hoped there will be a national network of screens – both permanent and temporary – which will enable local communities to gather and watch London 2012 events.
