No complacency as construction project faces its toughest year

Since the project started, the ODA has achieved a health and safety record far better than the industry average with a total of eight sets of a million hours worked without a reportable accident.

ODA Chairman John Armitt said: 'We have achieved an excellent safety record on the project so far through the commitment and hard work of everyone on the site.  However, there are still huge challenges ahead of us as we enter our toughest year.

'The number of workers and activity on site will reach its peak with construction underway in every part of the Olympic Park. The logistical challenge is huge with the workforce increasing to around 11,000, and deliveries increasing from the current rate of around 650 per day to around a 1,000 per day.

'We cannot afford any complacency, but I am confident that with what we have achieved to date the foundations for success are firmly in place.'
