New pictures issued as work to treble capacity at London 2012 gateway station races ahead

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has released new photos of work racing ahead at Stratford Regional Station in preparation for the hundreds of thousands of spectators that will use it everyday during the London 2012 Games.

The ODA has also released time lapse footage of the Town Centre Link Bridge, which is being pushed over the 11 railway lines at Stratford in three stages this year. You can download the footage and the new pictures from here:  http://mm.gettyimages.com/mm/nicePath/locog?nav=pr124103479

By 2016, the number of passengers at Stratford Regional Station in the morning peak is expected to more than double, and the ODA’s work to treble the capacity of the station and improve accessibility will help meet this future demand.

The new pictures show work underway on:
The ODA is also restoring and re-opening the eastern subway.  The subway will reduce congestion and provide easier interchange between services.

Stratford is currently used by more than 37,000 people in the morning peak and this will rise to 120,000 during the Games.  Construction at Stratford Regional Station will treble the capacity of the station, and by 2016 83,000 people will be using it during the morning peak. All this will take place with the minimum of disruption to the operation of the station.

The capacity of Stratford International Station, Stratford Regional Station and West Ham station during the Olympic and Paralympic Games will be 240,000 people per hour.  On the busiest day an expected 800,000 people will be arriving at the Olympic Park throughout the day.

  • An extended canopy on platform 6/8 to protect spectators and commuters from the weather;
  • Two new London Overground platforms that have recently opened which have enabled work to start on converting the old platforms for DLR use.  The converted platforms will then become part of the extension being built from Stratford Regional to Stratford International;
  • Lift shaft progress on one of the new lifts to improve accessibility at the station for spectators, residents and commuters; and
  • Progress on the new mezzanine entrance which will help to treble the capacity of the station and improve passenger interchange between lines.
Most of this work will benefit commuters and residents long before London 2012, as it will be finished by the end of next year – almost two years before the Games.

ODA Transport Director Hugh Sumner said: 'The vast majority of spectators going to the Games by train in 2012 will use Stratford Regional Station.  This £100m construction project to treble capacity will make sure that we can get everyone to the Olympic Park quickly and safely, as well as serve the growing community in years to come.

'The new pictures we have released today showing the progress at Stratford Station will give people a sense of what is going on behind the scenes.  Stratford Station will be completed as early as 2010 – which means that the benefits will be felt two years before the Games start.'

The new entrance for the station at mezzanine level, which will be the biggest visible change to the front of the station, will help reduce congestion during the Games.  It will allow people leaving the Olympic Park to bypass the subways and use a new bridge to directly access the new Central line and DLR platforms for services towards London.  In the years after the Games, it will continue to help reduce congestion for people using the new parklands and visitors to Stratford City.

Work at the station that has already been completed includes:
  • Platform 6/8 has been widened;
  • Platform clutter has been removed, creating more space on the platform; and
  • Two of the new lifts are already in operation.
