LOCOG appoints Atkins as official engineering design services provider

The London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) has appointed Atkins as the official engineering design services provider for the London 2012 Games. The company will provide multidisciplinary engineering design consultan

The contract will see Atkins working with LOCOG to support the delivery of the competition venues, operation centres and back of house support required for the Games. This will include building services design, civil and structural engineering, acoustics, fire and accessibility advice for London 2012’s venues including those at Horse Guards Parade, Greenwich Park and Hyde Park in London, St James’ Park in Newcastle, Hampden Park in Glasgow, Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, as well as those on the Olympic Park itself.

Atkins has been part of the design team for the Olympic Park site-wide infrastructure since late 2005, working with partners to deliver a range of services including aspects of the clearing and cleaning of the site, infrastructure such as roads, bridges and utilities and environmental and ecological support.

London 2012 Chairman Lord Coe said: 'We are now at the half-way point between winning the bid and staging the Games and the appointment of Atkins is a real sign that the project is developing at a rapid pace and that we are well on track. Atkins is a world class player in this field, with a fantastic record of working on major projects. They know the project inside out and will be a valuable partner on the road to 2012.'

Having secured the contract, Atkins will also have the rights to use the designation as Official Engineering Design services provider for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in its marketing materials.

As it heads towards its £2bn budget for staging the Olympic and Paralympic Games, LOCOG now has seven domestic Tier One Partners - adidas (Sportswear Partner), BP (Oil and Gas Partner), British Airways (Airline Partner), BT (Communications Services Partner), EDF Energy (Energy Utilities Services Partner), Lloyds TSB (Banking and Insurance Partner) and Nortel (Network Infrastructure Partner).   • Around 20 at the Olympic Park – including competition venues, operation centres and back of house support;
  • Up to 15 along the Thames and in Central London;
  • Up to 13 outside London – including Manchester, Glasgow, Birmingham, Newcastle and Cardiff;
  • Around 50 non-competition / training venues, i.e. related to logistics and support.

Atkins’ primary role on London 2012 to date has been as part of the design team for the Olympic Park site-wide infrastructure, having been appointed in December 2005. The company has been working with partners to deliver a range of services, including:

Park infrastructure – including the site clean-up; earthworks management; hard landscaping and archaeological evaluations;
  • Highways, rail and transportation – including design of public highways, bridge structures, underpasses and retaining structures;
  • Environmental and Ecology Support – including ecological management to ensure adequate protection, mitigation and enhancement of biodiversity, as well as ensuring critical programming requirements are adhered to;
  • Utilities – including multidisciplinary design activities in relation to gas, water, drainage, heating & cooling and electrical networks.
