Olympic Park ‘Big Build’ opens up to local people

Local residents will once again have opportunity to visit the 2.5 kilometre squared London 2012 Olympic Park, which is becoming the largest construction site in Europe, during this year’s London Open House weekend on 20 & 21 September.

Ticket lines have opened in advance to enable local people to snap up tickets for free bus tours every 20 minutes between 9am – 6pm on both days. Last year over 2,000 Londoners took the opportunity to visit the Olympic Park to see firsthand the cleaning and clearing of the land. This year London Open House visitors will be able to see most of the preparation of the site complete and the ‘Big Build’ underway with construction work already taking place on major venues including the Olympic Stadium and Aquatics Centre and on vital infrastructure such as bridges, and utility networks.

ODA Chief Executive David Higgins said: 'This is a great opportunity for local people to see firsthand how this neglected and contaminated part of London is being transformed into a new urban park that will house world class sporting venues for the London 2012 Games and legacy. It is very important to us to keep local people up-to-date with progress on the Park and consult them on our work. There is nothing like seeing with your own eyes how much this area is changing as venues start coming out of the ground. I hope this will become an annual day out for local families as the excitement builds right up to the 2012 Games.'

Bus tours will run from the SCORE Complex on Oliver Road in Leyton. Places must be booked in advance on 0845 671 8010. An exhibition at the Score Complex will feature sporting activities and information on the plans for the Olympic Park for the Games and legacy, as well as London 2012 related employment opportunities.

Notes to editors:

For safety reasons children under 8 are not permitted on the bus tours.
