The work to be undertaken is to design, construct, test and commission a new 132/11kv primary substation which will form a key part of the electrical infrastructure for the Olympic Park, the Stratford City development and the ongoing regeneration of the Lower Lea Valley area.
The substation will be located in Kings Yard in the west of the Olympic Park and a clear emphasis will be put on its architectural design to ensure that the structure fits in with the design of the wider Olympic Park and Stratford City.
Detailed design work will continue later this year and work to construct the electrical substation is due to begin in late 2007, continuing into 2009. The adoption, ownership and operation of the primary substation will form part of a subsequent contract.
The contract award follows the ODA’s announcement of ten key milestones to be achieved by the 2008 Beijing Games, with the fourth milestone focusing on the start of installation of new utilities infrastructure in the Olympic Park and Stratford City.
A series of contracts for the installation and operation of the new utilities during and after the Games is currently out to tender. The contracts have been issued in 7 lots including gas, water, sewerage and electrical networks, telecoms ducts, energy centres and heating and cooling water pipework for the Olympic Park and the Stratford City development. The contracts are expected to be awarded in Autumn 2007.
ODA Director of Infrastructure and Utilities, Simon Wright, said:
"The contract for the electrical substation is the first piece in the jigsaw for the utilities network and the letting of the major utilities contracts later this year will be a big step towards delivering a first class infrastructure for the Olympic Park.
"The utilities infrastructure will not only fuel six weeks of world class sporting action, but also the lasting regeneration of the area for many years to come and show that we are planning Games and legacy together from the very beginning."
