ODA steps up search for media centre legacy user

The ODA has today (Friday) invited proposals from companies and organisations which are interested in maximising the huge employment potential of the London 2012 International Broadcast Centre and Main Press Centre (IBC/MPC) after the Games.

During the Games the broadcast and press centre will provide 24 hour, state of the art facilities to the 20,000 international and domestic accredited broadcasters, wire services, print journalists and photographers. After 2012 the IBC/MPC buildings offer a significant business opportunity for users, investors, developers or other organisations.

The new facilities, set in the largest urban park to be created in Europe in the last 150 years, will provide around 1.3 million square feet (120,000 square metres) of employment space, car-parking for up to 1,300 cars, first class public transport links, and walking and cycling routes.

Following several expressions of interest from companies and organisations, the ODA is now inviting firm proposals for the legacy use of the IBC/MPC. An OJEU notice has been issued and the opportunity is being advertising more widely to ensure a fair and open procurement process.

Olympic Delivery Authority Chief Executive, David Higgins said:

"The ODA has a duty to build a world class media centre for the world’s broadcasters, press and photographers. We are also committed to ensuring a legacy use for the centre that offers the best long-term boost to employment opportunities in Hackney."

Hackney Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Cllr Guy Nicholson, said:

"The London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games are bringing many lasting benefits for our borough, including jobs for local people and new opportunities for business and enterprise. The facilities at Hackney Wick will bring a high quality, high specification workspace to the area, helping to turn around a part of our borough that has suffered from a sustained period of environmental decline.

"This new workspace will be a vital part of the new neighbourhood after the Games, providing excellent opportunities for jobs and business. It will be located alongside high quality open, green space. This is a unique development opportunity which the Council and all its partners are fully committed to maximising for East London."

Notes to editors

- ODA adverts inviting proposals for the legacy use of the IBC/MPC have been placed in property media this week with the following specifications:

Providing relevant, long term solutions for all permanent facilities being built for the London 2012 Games is a commitment shared by the London 2012 delivery organisations and is an essential part of the ODA's commitment to boosting long-term employment prospects in the areas around the Olympic Park.
