The Greenway is a neglected and underused 3km public walkway that runs from Victoria Park to West Ham. At the beginning of February, the ODA encouraged up-and-coming landscape and urban design practices to bid for the lead design services on the phased regeneration of this key infrastructure link.
Alison Nimmo, ODA Director of Design and Regeneration said:
"We have been extremely pleased with the level of interest for this important project, particularly from small and niche design practices. The quality of entries was exceptional and the panel had to make tough choices to narrow it down to a short-list of just five.
"This is an important project to revitalise a vital link in the neglected public spaces in and around the Olympic Park area. It will give the right designer the opportunity to use creativity and imagination to support the regeneration in this area of London."
The ODA received over 70 expressions of interest which then resulted in a short-list of five practices:
- Adams and Sutherland
- Alison Brooks Architects
- Erect architecture
- Kinnear Landscape Architects
- PLUS

Notes to Editors
- The deadline for the receipt of expressions of interest was 26 February and a Design Selection Panel then made a shortlist for interview and tender. Phased work is planned to begin this year with an aim to open the first section to the public in summer 2008 (Stratford High St to Victoria Park and towpath from Carpenters Road to Old Ford Lock) and the full Greenway by 2010.
- The expected value of the contract is beneath the requirement for an OJEU. In the application material the ODA explicitly said it is looking for practices that can demonstrate a high level of creativity and design quality and will "look positively at submissions from emerging practices".
