London 2012 Aquatics Centre plans showcased to construction industry

The plans for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Aquatics Centre were showcased to potential construction contractors today.

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) industry day gave major construction companies and sub-contractors a detailed look at the architect Zaha Hadid’s ground-breaking design for the Centre, which includes a sweeping roof inspired by the movement of water.

The event also provided the ODA with industry feedback before the process of selecting a main contractor to build the stadium begins next month.

Over 250 business people attended today’s event including representatives from some of the UK and Europe’s major building contractors, sub-contractors and suppliers.

Welcoming industry guests this morning ODA Chief Executive David Higgins said:

"The Aquatics Centre will form a spectacular 'gateway to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games' from Stratford. After the Games it will become a new and lasting landmark for London, a new home for UK swimming and a new swimming and fitness facility for local people.

"Dialogue with the industry is very important as we move to the next stage of the project and this industry day provides a significant opportunity to explain our approach and listen to your views."

Following an introduction from David Higgins, the industry day heard and discussed presentations from key ODA and CLM management and procurement staff. A member of Zaha Hadid’s team ran through the designs for the Aquatics Centre legacy and Games use.

An OJEU contract notice for a main contractor will be issued in March with a view to appointing by the end of the year. Work is already underway clearing the site for the Aquatics Centre and further preparation will take place next year before construction late 2008.

  • The 20,000 capacity Aquatics Centre will form the 'gateway to the Games' from Stratford and will host Swimming, Synchronised Swimming, Diving and elements of the Modern Pentathlon. After the Games most of the innovatively designed seating will be removed, leaving in legacy a 2,500 capacity elite swimming venue that can be boosted to 3,500 seats, and local swimming facilities. The ODA is discussing with stakeholders other options to maximise the long-term value of the venue, such as health and fitness facilities.
  • Zaha Hadid won the Aquatics Centre design competition in January 2005 and published revised concept designs in November 2006, taking account of the more compact nature of the Olympic Park. Zaha's team have been working with leading swimming pool architects S&P on installing the latest pool technology to provide maximum flexibility after the Games, and Arup on structural and services design.
