Olympic fever also continues to rise around the country, with venues and big screens across the UK attracting huge crowds as people cheer on the athletes. To date, the London 2012 Live Sites have seen 2.7 million people attend, with the busiest day being Super Saturday (4th August) - which saw an incredible 350,000 people turn out to support all athletes. An estimated 160,000 spectators also took to the streets of central London to witness Olympic history as Alistair Brownlee became the first British athlete to win gold in the Men’s Triathlon event (7th August). 120,000 spectators lined the streets for the Women’s Marathon (5th August) and 60,000 turned out for the Women’s Triathlon (4th August).
LOCOG Chair, Seb Coe said: ‘The passion and spirit of the British public has been outstanding. The huge crowds have contributed to making the atmosphere at events in both the Olympic Park and venues around the country incredible. I am very proud of the performance of our athletes, of my team which has given its heart and soul to these Games over the last seven years as well as the brilliant volunteers who seem to be having an extraordinary impact on everyone they meet.
