The Olympic Football tournament which kicks off the London 2012 Games will begin on the 25 July and will see 58 matches take place across six major Football grounds in the UK including City of Coventry Stadium, Hampden Park, Millennium Stadium, Old Trafford, St James’ Park, and Wembley Stadium.
The Get Set network students from 24 primary schools, located nearby the grounds, will act as flag bearers and player escorts. The flag bearers will carry out the national flags of the teams that are playing onto the pitch at the beginning of a match whilst player escorts will walk onto the pitch with the captains at the beginning of a match. In a final or bronze medal match, all players will walk on with a player escort.
Both the flag bearers and player escorts will be responsible for leading the teams and match officials onto the pitch.
The schools have been selected through the reward and recognition programme of Get Set, the official London 2012 education programme. They have demonstrated a commitment to living the Olympic and Paralympic Values and incorporating them into their school lives and curriculum.
LOCOG Chair, Seb Coe said: ‘There are already so many exciting ways schools are getting involved and playing their part in London 2012. This is another great opportunity run through Get Set which will show London 2012’s commitment to put young people at the heart of the Games.’
