Horse Guards Parade

In September 2010 the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) consulted the local community about our plans for Horse Guards Parade.

Message from Seb Coe

'Horse Guards Parade, probably best known for the Trooping the Colour ceremony held on the Queen’s official birthday each year, would provide a spectacular setting for the Olympic Beach Volleyball events.'

Our plans

In order to stage the Olympic Beach Volleyball events at Horse Guards Parade in 2012, we applied to Westminster City Council for planning permission. The planning application included details of temporary structures and facilities needed to stage the Beach Volleyball events at Horse Guards Parade, and the provisional start and finish of Olympic and Paralympic road events on The Mall. Westminster City Council granted planning consent for this application on 13 January 2011. You can view and comment on our plans by:

  • calling us on Freephone 0800 198 2012;
  • writing to us at Freepost 2012 Games; or

Please note that our formal period of pre-planning application consultation has now ended. However, we still welcome your feedback on our proposals.

LOCOG is working with The Royal Parks to minimise the impact to St James’s Park and its visitors. Information will continue to be available between now and 2012.

Frequently asked questions

How will you ensure that you won’t damage the park and Horse Guards Parade?

We take our responsibilities very seriously. Our planning application showed the detailed work we have carried out on all aspects of our plans for St James’s Park and Horse Guards Parade. We will make sure that we return the park and Horse Guards Parade in the same condition in which we receive them.

The potential impacts of our plans have been thoroughly assessed as part of a full Environmental Impact Statement within our Planning Application. This addressed the effects of the project on habitats, flora and fauna.

When will St. James’s Park and Horse Guards Parade close, and how long will they be closed for?

St. James’s Park and Horse Guards Parade will remain open for as long as possible. From mid-June 2012 to September 2012, access to Horse Guards Parade and areas of St James’s Park will be restricted.

We will need to close The Mall and Horse Guards Road to traffic while we install temporary overlay and spectator seating, across this area. This work will be carried out in late June, following Trooping the Colour. This is also to create a safe and secure building area for our contractors and to ensure the public is protected.
