Changing lives
In Trinidad & Tobago, International Inspiration is increasing access to sport and physical activity amongst children and young people. It is also using sport to build connections between young people, including those who may have been involved in anti-social activity, and is developing leadership skills, self-respect, confidence and teamwork.
‘When my teacher first told me about International Inspiration he said it might change my life, and I feel like it has. I feel more confident, comfortable with myself and more committed. It makes me want to come to school, I feel like I’ve made lots of new friends and like I have a reason to want to get involved.’
Andre, 15
The programme also supports a national campaign to promote the importance and value of sport and physical education (PE) for children and young people, particularly for those with disabilities.
Links with schools in Haringey, London, are enabling teenagers in both countries to work together using common themes.
Continued success
- Using sport to provide development opportunities for young people in health, education and child protection.
-Assisting organisations in building capacity to help manage inclusive sport programmes.
Case study
A bright future in difficult circumstances
Sheriece is a Young Leader at El Dorado School in Trinidad. She lives on a large estate where young people are often involved in crime; people have died in her estate car park as a result of violence. Since becoming involved in International Inspiration, Sheriece has blossomed as a young leader, has a bright future ahead of her and is encouraging others to follow her example.
Sheriece said: ‘Being involved in International Inspiration has changed my perspective on a lot of things. I am able to enjoy myself and have fun through being part of the programme – sometimes things are hard, and it’s nice to be able to meet new people through sports, to have fun as a team and to get away from the negativity.
'This programme has encouraged me to be an inspiration for young people. It has helped me feel like I am able to have a positive influence on others. I love everything about sports but I've never had the opportunity before to actually learn and understand things about it. Then International Inspiration came along!'
