British born football star David Beckham is admired by fans around the world for his skills and powerful free kicks on the field. David became an International Inspiration Ambassador in July 2009.
Biography
David’s career began when he signed a professional contract with Manchester United, making his first-team debut in 1992 aged 17. He later moved to Real Madrid. David captained England from November 2000 until the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. He currently plays in midfield for Los Angeles Galaxy.
March 2005 saw the launch of the David Beckham Academy, one of the largest grassroots sports initiatives in the UK. Each year, over 10,000 schoolchildren benefit from state-of-the-art facilities and a free educational day to encourage participation in football and other sport.
In 2003, David was awarded an OBE for services to football. In 2005, he was appointed UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, with a special focus on the Sports for Development programme.
David was delighted to play a prominent role in London’s bid to host the 2012 Games, and was part of the delegation in Singapore in 2005 when the announcement was made that London was successful in its campaign.
David accepted another chance to give something back to young people around the world and to the game he loves by becoming an International Inspiration Ambassador in 2009.
