Clinical Lead - Emergency Medical Services Work Stream

The role:


A unique secondment opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified, dynamic and experienced clinician to lead the planning for Emergency Medical Care at the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in London in 2012.

Knowledge of mass gathering health management, emergency medical service provision, responding to disasters, detailed knowledge of the National Health Service, its systems and governance and an understanding of guides and rules related to sporting venues and public gatherings are essential.

You will be an experienced clinician in practice, preferably in the NHS, and manage an acute emergency service with significant numbers of staff. You must be able to demonstrate implementation of new systems of clinical care, policies and procedures. You will have experience in education and training methods. You will act as the Emergency Medical Care expert for LOCOG

Initial commitment will be for half a day per month and will increase as planning escalates. The successful applicant will be expected to be available for Test Events and the Games in 2012.


Key responsibilities/accountabilities include the following:


  • Recruit a small group of specialist volunteers in the field of emergency medicine with experience in sporting events and mass gatherings from a range of professional groups and external partners
  • Coordinate the work of the group to ensure targets are achieved
  • Provide updates to LOCOG’s Medical Advisory Group on progress
  • Be a core medical services team member
  • Be an expert on emergency medical care for medical services planning for the Games
  • Devise a plan to deliver a program of work developed with LOCOG’s Medical Services Manager

Skills, knowledge and experience required:


  • Mass gathering health management
  • Emergency medical service provision
  • Disaster response
  • Detailed knowledge of the National Health Service and its systems and governance
  • Have detailed knowledge of guides and rules related to sporting venues and public gatherings
  • Senior clinician in clinical practice preferably the NHS
  • Manager of an acute emergency service
  • Manages a substantive number of people
  • Track record of developing and implementing new systems of clinical care. - introduction of policies and procedures
  • Education and training experience
