Construction College East London

A new centre has been opened at Eton Manor in the north of the Olympic Park to train people who are interested in working in construction to help them get a job building for London 2012.

Training facility

The Construction College East London has been built to replicate a construction site so trainees can practice using the machinery and know what it feels like to work on site.

Courses are available for people who may not have had construction experience and also for those who do but want to boost their skills.

The college has been running since December 2007. Already, around 80 trainees have undertaken one of six courses, which range from learning to drive a dumper truck and using an excavator to directing crane operators. Over the next two years 190 students a year will learn about driving and controlling heavy plant machinery.

The initiative is funded by the ODA, Learning and Skills Council, London Development Agency (LDA) and the private sector.

National Skills Academy for Construction

The College is part of the National Skills Academy for Construction (NSAfC) for the London 2012 construction programme, which the ODA has formed in partnership with ConstructionSkills, the Learning and Skills Council, the LDA and the five Host Boroughs.

The programme will coordinate £38 million of training investment and offer around 2,000 placements and apprenticeships over the next four years.

The NSAfC will train people in the skills they need to get employment on the Olympic Park. It will also help the existing workforce to update and develop their skills. The NSAfC will coordinate a range of training providers to ensure they are equipping trainees with skills required by contractors on site.
