Top 10 most frequently asked questions

1) Can I still apply to volunteer?
Games Maker applications are now closed. However, there are plenty of other ways to get involved in London 2012.

2) When will I get a response to my volunteer application?

Games Maker applications closed on 27 October 2010 and since then we have been sorting through 240,000 applications - a mammoth task! In January we started inviting successful applicants to a selection event - these began at the start of February 2011 and will continue until early 2012. We'll give applicants at least a month's notice of their selection event. Check out the timeline for more information.

3) I've been for interview at a selection event - how soon will I find out if I've been successful?

We'll be interviewing 100,000 Games Maker applicants throughout 2011 and the start of 2012, and to make sure we give each application the time it deserves, we won't start making offers of Games Maker roles until September 2011. In the meantime, log in to the Games Maker zone for news and updates.

4) Will accommodation be provided for Games Makers?

No, given the numbers involved and difficulties in guaranteeing standards, it will be up to the individuals concerned to make their own arrangements.

5) As a person with disabilities, will I be able to volunteer alongside my support worker/personal assistant?

We are committed to ensuring that everybody has equal access at the London 2012 Games. This means that if you require a reasonable adjustment to carry out your Games Maker role as a result of your disability, we will make every attempt to provide this.

6) How many shifts will volunteers do?

Games Makers will need to volunteer for a minimum of 10 days during the Olympic or Paralympic Games, or a minimum of 20 days if volunteering at both.

7) Will you pay for volunteers to get to their venue at Games time?

Games Makers will be entitled to travel on public transport in London (zones 1-6) for free in order to get to their shifts during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

This will include travel between London and the following venues: Eton Dorney, Lee Valley White Water Centre and Hadleigh Farm, Essex. We will also provide free transport for Games Makers with roles in Weymouth and Portland and the co-Host Cities (within defined boundaries) of the Football competition: Manchester, Coventry, Cardiff, Newcastle and Glasgow. We will not provide free transport to these locations from elsewhere in the UK.

8) Will there be training for volunteers?
Yes. Volunteers will need to attend at least three training sessions prior to the Games. See the timeline for more information.

9) What are test events?

Test events will take place between May 2011 and May 2012. These events provide an opportunity to test the various Olympic and Paralympic venues and the supporting operations within those venues, to ensure everything is working well for the Games.

If you applied for a role within the Sport team, it is essential that you are available for the Test Event in your chosen sport.

10) How will London 2012 ensure that Games Makers accurately represent the diversity of the UK?

London 2012 is committed to meeting the diversity target zones laid out within our diversity and inclusion strategy.
