What is the Inspire programme?

The Inspire programme recognises high-quality, innovative and sustainable projects and events genuinely inspired by the 2012 Games, through award of the Inspire mark.

Why are we doing it?

We have a commitment to legacy – it is at the heart of our Games. We want to inspire the whole of the UK to be a part of the Games and ensure as wide a reach as possible for the Games. Projects within the Inspire programme will be an important part of the Games’ lasting legacy.

What are the themes for the Inspire programme?

The themes for the Inspire programme are sport, culture, education, the environment, volunteering and business bpportunities. Culture projects will also be part of the Cultural Olympiad.

What is the Cultural Olympiad?

The Cultural Olympiad is a four year UK-wide programme of culture which will welcome the world and inspire young people.

Who can apply to be part of the Inspire programme?

Non-commercial organisations will be able to apply to the Inspire programme for specific projects. The Inspire mark will be awarded to a limited number of outstanding non-commercial projects subject to a licence agreement and approval of artwork.

Can an organisation be considered?

No. The programme is specific to projects and events.

Can commercial companies apply even if it is for a not-for-profit event?

We will only accept applications from not-for-profit organisations.

How straightforward is the application process?

We’ve worked hard to keep the process as simple as possible but any projects must be exceptional and genuinely inspired by the 2012 Games.

Can organisations apply for the Inspire mark without having funding in place?

No. Projects must be fully or largely funded already and from non-commercial sources.

Will you fund projects receiving the Inspire mark?

No. We believe there are a variety of sources of funding to support great projects. However, the Inspire programme’s aim is specifically to identify those projects which draw real inspiration and connection to the values of London 2012.

Is there a right of appeal against a decision?

No. Applications are assessed against set criteria but we also have to make a judgement about content and about the balance of applications coming through. Written feedback will be provided to applicants who will be encouraged to re-apply where they can demonstrate they have developed their project further in response to our feedback.

What happens next for successful projects?

Once a project has been granted the Inspire mark, a brand licence will be issued to the lead organisation and the project manager and designer will be asked to attend a short induction session. We will also give you access to our online brand centre (where you will access the Inspire mark and guidelines) and Athena (where you will submit your artwork for approval – please allow 10 working days for review). Please note that you must have signed and returned your brand licence before artwork can be approved.

When will we see the Inspire mark being used?

The Inspire mark has already been granted to a range of exceptional projects and events at a regional and national level.
